Question: In reading Luke 1 during my quiet time, I have a question...

In vs 18, Zacharias asked how he would know these things... for he and his wife were old. Then he was made dumb/not able to speak because he believed not. Then in vs 34, Mary asked how shall this be because I know not a man, but there were no consequences because of her unbelief. My question is this: Why did Zacharias have consequences for his unbelief, but Mary didn't?

Great question!! I believe this is a matter of the heart. Zacharias was doubting or limiting God by the normal course of human nature... he rejected that God would do it and even wanted another sign. His mind was already made up that they were too old and there was no way he was going to have a son even if God told him that it was going to happen. As a result he was rebuked for it. Mary, however, was asking more from 'how it would be accomplished' rather than 'it is impossible for this to happen'. The angel Gabriel did not rebuke her for unbelief but rather explained it to her how the miracle would take place. For Mary it was not a matter of doubting God but of understanding how this miracle would happen 'since she had never known a man'.
Note: Doubt is not a problem of evidence, its a problem of a sinful heart.
